Joseph came to what was then Centre County in 1830 having inherited3000-4000 acres of timber land. He was a surveyor. In 1832 he built amill on the creek at the mouth of Monument Run, about 7 miles from BaldEagle. The first lumber sawn was for the Harrisburg Bridge. He engagedin the lumber business until 1858. He sold the mill and turned tofarming on land he had cleared near Beechcreek Borough. He was chosen asan auditor for Beechcreek Township when it was formed in 1850 from BaldEagle.
