Ronald met Clara at Oberlin College as students. He waited table for herdorm. When he enlisted in the army in 1918 (WWI), they got married before hereported for service in N.Y. After the war when he was looking for a job, Clara wrote to herStepFather in Hawaii to see if there was a job at the fertilizer works.They moved to Hawai on March 22, 1919, to take a job at the fertilizercompany which was then called Pacific Guano and Fertilizer. Ronald worked for the fertilizer company for 42 years going from foremanto president of the company. The company named changed to PacificChemical and Fertilizer until it shut down in about 1963. The land onwhich it lay had become worth more than the company. They were both public spirited and held positions in many clubs andpublic organizations. He returned to service in the army during WWII and Clara worked as acensor clerk.
