Anton was one of the original settlers of St. Mary's, PA. He moved his family from Philadelphia to Centreville (Kersey) in November 1842. The male settlers left their families in Centreville to go to the banks of Elk Creek and build 12 foot by 12 foot log cabins. Father Alexander of Baltimore was in charge of the colony. On December 8, 1842, the settlers returned from Centreville with their families. December 8 was the feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In her honor, the town was named Saint Mary's. On Mar 3, 1848, the town of St. Mary's was incorporated as a borough. In 1880, he is living with his daughter, Maria, and son-in-law, Martin Dipold. From the Elk County Gazette on 26 Nov 1885: "On Thursday last Anton Ewis, (commonly spelled Avis) died at his residence in Benzinger twp. Mr. Ewis was one of the first settlers of St. Marys he having moved to this settlement with the original colony in 1842. His has been a checkered career. There is a difference of opinion as to the exact year of his birth but it was as early as 1800, some claiming that he was born in 1798. In 1830 he emigrated from Prussia, the land of his birth, shipping for the United States, but through the treachery of the Captain of the vessel, he with 500 others were sold into slavery in San Domingo. Mr. Ewis escaped from that island and landed in Philadelphia in 1832. He lived in that city until '42 when he sought a home in the wild forests of what is now Elk County, with the sturdy pioneers that accompanied him. His wife, who came with him died a few years ago. He was an honest, hard-working citizen and had the respect of all who knew him. "Mr. Ewis leaves two sons and a daughter to mourn his death." IGI lists an Anton Evers marrying an Elisabeth Eyers on 16 Jan 1831 in Driburg, Westfalia, Prussia. Could this be the same Anton?
