William was among the early members of the Society of Friends in Englandand was a friend of George Fox. He is mentioned in George Fox's journalsin several places as having held meetings at the William's house.William was educated and wrote tracts for his church. William Smith of Sileby was imprisoned with George Fox briefly for onemonth and then for 6 years from 1667 to 1673 - all related to his being aQuaker. He signed a complaint to the authorities (of the persecution ofQuakers). William is mentioned in "A Descriptive Catalogue of Friends' Books" p 612& 613 - of Market - Harborough in Leicestershire - his publicationwritten in 10th month 1648 in Market Harborough was printed in 1679 (Thetitle is 17 lines long!). He's also in the "Dictionary of NationalBiography" which mentions his relationship to George Fox and the meetingheld at William's place in Sileby. William may have had a father namedHenry. William Smith of Sileby was an early Quaker, friend of George Fox,mentioned in the latter's journal and in Besse, "Sufferings of the Peoplecalled Quakers" Vol I p 332, 333, 335, 337; Author of "Wisdom of theEarthly Wise Confounded ..." (1679); Sheppard "The Welcome Society" Part2 Passengers & Ships p. 182 names the 3 sons and their settlement inDarby, Pennsylvania, 1684. In "Piety Promoted" author unknown, EleanorDolby and John Harby are mentioned. Their marriage was recorded in theHinkley Monthly Meeting Book in Leicester, England. Five of his seven children immigrated to Pennsylvania in 1864-65 havingpurchased land there.
